Huh Young-man was born Heo Hyeong-man in nowadays Yeosu, a far southern coastal city of South Jeolla province, South Korea in 1947.[1] Huh was the third child of the eight children to father Heo Jong (허종) and mother Park Ok-jeong (박옥정). Before and after the liberation of Korea from Japan in 1945, Huh's father had worked as a local policeman. When the Yeosu Rellion occurred in 1948, Huhs' family was in danger of being killed by the rebels. In contrast to Huh's father, his uncle was a communist, so that Huhs' family was ironically protected by the both sides. However, Huh was later told many times that he could've been killed along with his mother during the incident by some communist who was once captivated by his father. The political conflict strongly influenced on Huh's works such as Oh, Han River and Tazza.[2]
After the Korea War was over, Huh's father worked as an administrative officer at Yeosu Office of Education for a while but started his own business. Hur's mother ran a kitchenware branch store which went well since because Yeosu served as a trading base between neighboring islands.[1][3]
Huh wanted to study Western painting at university but as his father's business in anchovy fishery was declined, he gave up the dream. Huh instead entered the manhwa world as an apprentice to a cartoonist.[1]
In 1974, Huh debuted with In search for home (Jipeul chajaseo) through a competition seeking new cartoonists hosted by the Sonyeon Hankook Ilbo (Boy's Korean Times). The work is an adventure As Gaksital gained a big success, Huh become famous.[4] Heo has serializesd Gourmet (Sikgaek) for The Dong-a Ilbo and Tazza and Saranghae for Sports Chosun. Among his works, Gourmet, "Asphalt Man", "Tazza" "Beat" have been adapted into drama or film.[5][6][7]
